In the past the Korean scientific community was hesitant about working with creationists due to the fear of giving the movement more credibility. However, silence is no anymore an option.
The STR has been fighting to eliminate content from textbooks that discuss evolution, including the discovery of the feathered dinosaur Archaeopteryx as an early bird's ancestor. But this is merely one aspect of the evolution of the developmental paradigm.
What is Evolution?

Despite the fact that evolution has withstood the tests of time and thousands of scientific studies Creationists have taken advantage of the notion that the theory is controversial and argue that it should not be taught in school. In South Korea, creationists won some victories against evolution in textbooks for high schools. In South Korea, a group called the Society for Textbook Revise (STR) which is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research, is campaigning for the elimination of textbook content on the evolution of horses as well as the avian ancestor Archaeopteryx.
It is important to remember, however, that the evidence in support of evolution is overwhelming. The evidence for evolution comes from many sources, including fossils, genetics, and even the behavior of living creatures. Other scientists independently confirm the evidence.
The vast majority of scientists agree with the theory of evolution. The reasons behind this support vary. Scientists are studying evolution to make practical discoveries, such as developing new medicines, while others do so to improve animal and plants species, mostly to benefit humans. Some scientists are simply curious, while others hold a an intense belief in God.
What is Creationism?
Creationists believe that God created everything in the universe. They also believe that the Bible is the word of God and should be taken seriously. Although Creationists may not all be Christian however, many are. Creationists typically fall into one of two categories: Young Earth creationists (YEC) and old earth creationists (OEC).
The YECs are the best known type of creationist, and they believe that God created the world exactly as described in the Bible. YECs hold that the biblical account of six days of creation is literal and that the universe and life on Earth were only created recently.
OECs are not as well-known However, they're just as enthusiastic about their beliefs as YECs. OECs believe the universe and Earth are billions-of-years old and believe that evolution is a lie.
Both types of creationism deny that scientific principles such as natural selection and abiogenesis are able to explain the origin of life on Earth. They argue that evolution is not possible because it would require miracles. The pioneers of modern scientific thought resisted miracles because they feared they could lose their credibility.
Some creationists are able to accept naturalistic evolution as well as special creation, and refer to their view "theistic evolution." This is sometimes referred to as "continuous creationism" or "evolution from the original species." In this belief system, God creates the original species, and then allows them to change over time. These evolutionary changes eventually will result in new species similar to the original.
Some creationists believe that God created all living things and the universe in one event called the Great Flood. These creationists hold that all the original species were created at the same time and that they gradually evolved. They also deny the notion of abiogenesis, and argue that the emergence of self-replicating organisms from nonliving matter is impossible.
In general, the creationists are opposed to the teaching of evolution in schools. This is supported by a myriad of professional associations which include the National Science Teachers Association, the Association for Science Teacher Education as well as the American Anthropological Association, and the Geological Society of America. Some academic institutions and scientists, however, are more flexible and permit both creationism and evolution to be included in their curricula.
What is Creationism in Korea?
When people think of creationism most often, they think of the United States. South Korea also has an anti-evolutionist group. The publishers of high-school textbooks recently announced that they would remove the mention of evolution in their books. A group called the Society for Textbook Revise (STR), an independent body that is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research which is the driving force behind the campaign. The STR has achieved its first victory by removing from textbooks evidence of the evolution and ancestor of an avian, called the Archeopteryx. The focus is now on removing snippets of Darwin's notorious finch research and on human evolution, too.
STR claims that it has the support of 4000 families and individuals. Its goal, it says is to clear the world of what it calls "atheist materialism" that paints an image of students as being negative. It also hopes to combat the influence of American Creationists in the nation. A survey of students in biology found that half did not believe evolution. The reasons aren't clear, but could include religion or the absence of creation scientists in the US.
The KACR has achieved a lot through its seminars and lectures in the past. It publishes a bimonthly magazine, Creation, and has published books. One of these was a textbook on natural sciences that had a creationist perspective. It sparked interest among college communities. In 1991 an academic and minister started teaching Creation Science in one university, and it continues to be taught to this day.
On August 7 and 8 in 1993, the same day that the World Expo opened in Daejeon, KACR held a second International Symposium on Creation Research. Six lecturers from around the world including ICR's John Morris, Duane Gish and Steven Austin spoke to audiences of several thousand. KACR members and KACR have also given talks on creation science in prestigious seminaries. KACR plans to establish a Creation Science Education Center.
